SAME ART.
NO GI.

No-Gi is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu without the traditional uniform. Instead of gripping a collar and sleeves, you control your partner with underhooks, overhooks, wrist control, head-and-arm control and body position. The principles are the same (position before submission, leverage over strength) but the pace is faster and the game looks a lot more like wrestling.

At Flow Academy Indio, Tuesday is No-Gi night for every age group, and Thursday is Gi night on the same schedule, so most members train both. Adult No-Gi is led by Professor Albert Aguirre, and Coach Adrian leads Kids & Youth No-Gi.

Why train No-Gi

WHY TRAIN
NO-GI.

No-Gi is where Jiu-Jitsu meets wrestling. It rewards athleticism and movement, it builds a strong base for MMA, and it makes your whole game sharper, with or without the gi.

01

Athleticism

Without fabric to hold, you rely on body position, timing and movement. No-Gi builds strong hips, balance, and the conditioning to keep moving through a whole round.

02

Wrestling crossover

Underhooks, front headlocks, sprawls and snap-downs come straight from wrestling. Former wrestlers feel at home quickly, and grapplers who never wrestled pick up the skills they’ve been missing.

03

Grip and hand-fighting

Instead of collar-and-sleeve grips, you learn wrist control, two-on-one and hand-fighting: control that works when the other person is in everyday clothes.

04

Scrambles and takedowns

With less friction, positions change fast. No-Gi teaches you to win the scramble, finish the takedown, and come up on top.

05

A base for MMA

No-Gi grappling is the ground game of mixed martial arts. Flow Academy Indio runs Adult MMA on Fridays at 6:30 PM and Saturdays from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, and Tuesday No-Gi is direct grappling preparation for it.

06

A faster pace

Rounds move quicker, so you learn to think and react under pressure. It’s a great conditioning night, and it keeps training fresh.

07

It carries over to the Gi

What you learn about position, pressure and movement in No-Gi makes your Gi game better, and the reverse is true too. That’s why the adult membership covers both.

08

Self-defense in everyday clothes

No-Gi trains control and escapes when there’s no jacket to grab, which is closer to what people actually wear day to day.

09

For kids and youth, too

Tuesday No-Gi gives kids and youth the athletic, wrestling-style side of the art, while Thursday Gi builds the technical side. Training both builds a more complete grappler.

WHAT A NO-GI CLASS
LOOKS LIKE.

No-Gi follows the same structure as every Flow class, with more of the work starting from the feet and from fast-moving positions.

  1. Warm-up

    Grappling movement

Shrimping, bridging, rolls, sprawls and partner drills get you loose and build the movement No-Gi depends on.

  2. Technique

    The technique of the day

The coach shows a takedown, pass, escape or submission, explains why it works without grips on the gi, and breaks it into steps.

  3. Drilling

    Partner reps

Partners take turns repeating the technique cooperatively while coaches walk the mat and fix details like hand position and head position.

  4. Live

    Positional and live rounds

Rounds from a specific position with a goal, then live rounds matched by size and experience. Beginners ease in, and a tap always ends the round.

  5. Cool-down

    Line up and wrap up

Stretch, line up and shake hands. Ask your coach what to drill before next Tuesday.

Honest answers

BEFORE YOUR
FIRST TUESDAY.

I’ve never grappled. Should I start with the Gi?

You don’t have to.

You can start with either. No-Gi is a great entry point, especially if you have a wrestling or athletic background. Most members end up training both.

I wrestled in high school.

You’ll feel at home.

Your takedowns, top pressure and scrambling carry right over. What you’ll add is guard work, submissions, and how to stay safe and calm on your back.

Is No-Gi rougher than the Gi?

No. Same rules, same standard.

The pace is faster, but the rules don’t change: technique first, partners matched by experience, and a tap ends the round, every time.

Do I have to do MMA?

No.

No-Gi is pure grappling, with no punches or kicks. If you want striking later, Muay Thai and Adult MMA are on the schedule.

What if I only want No-Gi?

That’s fine.

Plenty of adults start on Tuesday nights only. Your adult membership covers Gi, No-Gi, or both, so you can add Thursday Gi whenever you’re ready.

Is it okay for teens?

Yes, by age group.

Ages 10–14 train Youth No-Gi at 6:00 PM. Students 15 and older can train Adult No-Gi at 7:00 PM.
