Borrow the Gloves: What to Bring to Your First Muay Thai Class
October 1, 2026
It’s the first week of October, the school routine has settled, and the Coachella Valley evenings have finally dropped out of the triple digits. The 7 PM adult Muay Thai class at Flow Academy Indio gets its usual fall wave of first-timers, and nearly every one of them asks the same thing before showing up: what do I bring?
The honest answer is yourself.
The Gloves and Wraps Are Already Here
For a first visit, gloves and wraps are ready to borrow. You don’t need to own anything to find out whether Muay Thai is for you. We would much rather see someone walk in empty-handed than skip class because they hadn’t gone shopping yet.
If you’ve never wrapped your hands, Coach Adrian will show you. It’s fiddly the first time, and nobody in the room expects you to get it right on the first try. Wraps go on first, gloves second, and then you’re ready to hit a pad.
What Goes in Your Bag
Keep it simple. This is really all you need:
- A water bottle, a big one
- Comfortable athletic clothes you can kick in, like shorts or leggings and a t-shirt
- A hair tie if you have long hair
Trim your nails before you come. You’ll be gripping pads and fastening straps, and short nails are kinder to everybody. Shoes come off at the edge of the mat, since Muay Thai is trained barefoot.
Show Up a Few Minutes Early
Give yourself a little cushion. Arriving early means you can say hello to Coach Adrian, leave your shoes by the mat, and get your wraps on without feeling rushed. October is still warm in Indio, and the room heats up fast once the pads come out, so drink water before class, not just during it.
Parents of younger students can plan the same way. Youth Muay Thai for ages 6 to 9 meets Monday and Wednesday at 5 PM, the 10-to-14 class follows at 6 PM, and the gloves and wraps are there for your child’s first visit too.
When You’ll Want Your Own
If you keep training, you’ll eventually want your own gloves, shin guards and a mouthguard. Borrowed gear is great for finding out if you like it; your own is better once you’re coming every week. When that day comes, we’ll point you to the right gear, so you aren’t guessing in a store aisle or ordering the wrong size online.
There’s no hurry. Muay Thai at Flow Academy Indio runs $125, $145 or $165 a month depending on whether you sign for 12 months, 6 months or go month to month, and uniforms aren’t included in those prices. Take a few classes before you decide anything.
Your first class is free. Walk in Monday or Wednesday at 42425 Jackson Street, Suite C112, or call or text us at (951) 337-3781 with questions first. You can read more about the adult Muay Thai class or the youth program before you come, but you really don’t need to pack a thing.
