When Do Beginners Start Rolling in Jiu-Jitsu?
November 2, 2026
When do beginners start rolling? At Flow Academy BJJ Indio, a new adult student spends the first classes drilling techniques with a cooperative partner, then joins light live rounds, which jiu-jitsu people call rolling, when they and the coach agree they’re ready. For most people that is within a few weeks, and nobody is asked to roll in a first class. You can try it in the Tuesday 7 PM No-Gi class, the Thursday 7 PM Gi class, the 5:00 AM Gi class on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, or at Saturday Open Mat.
It’s the first Monday of November in Indio. The clocks went back yesterday, so the 7 PM classes now start in full dark, and the valley has cooled enough that a warm-up feels good instead of punishing. Thanksgiving is a few weeks off, and the question we hear most from people standing at our front door is the same: will I be thrown in with someone on day one?
What Rolling Actually Is
Rolling is practice with a partner who resists a little, so you can try the move you just learned at a speed where you can still think. It’s closer to a conversation than a fight. Most of any class is drilling: the coach shows a technique, you and a partner repeat it back and forth, and the resistance only goes up as you get comfortable.
How the First Few Weeks Go
In your first class you drill. After that, many people try a short, light round at the end of class, and you can ask your coach to pair you with someone patient. Some students jump in sooner and some wait longer. Rolling is optional in your first weeks, and plenty of people sit out the live rounds while their breathing catches up. Neither choice makes you the odd one out.
The One Skill You Need First
It’s the tap. A tap is a pat on your partner or the mat, and the round stops right there. Professor Carlos Miller has taught for over 29 years, and the habit he starts with every beginner is the same: tap early, tell your partner what’s sore, and come back next class. If something already hurts, tell the coach before class, and check with your doctor if you’re unsure about starting.
Which Class to Try First
If you want the least pressure, Saturday Open Mat from 9 to 11 AM is our most relaxed room, and it’s a good place to drill all hour and skip rolling altogether. If you want an evening after work, Tuesday No-Gi and Thursday Gi both start at 7 PM. Come in comfortable workout clothes; you don’t need a gi on day one, and you’ll be barefoot on the mats.
Why Start Before the Holidays
A few weeks of Tuesdays and Thursdays now means you’ll already know your way around a round by the time the January crowd arrives. Your first class is free, with no commitment. You can read more on our adult jiu-jitsu page, or call or text (951) 337-3781, or stop by 42425 Jackson Street, Suite C112, Indio.
