What to Look For in a Kids Martial Arts School: A Checklist for Indio Families
November 3, 2026
A good kids martial arts school has background-checked, CPR-certified coaches, lets your child try a class for free, splits kids by age, teaches a clear curriculum, keeps safety visible and lets parents watch. Flow Academy Indio has taught Coachella Valley kids since 2007, and this is the list we’d want any family to bring on a first visit, to us or to anyone else.
The Checklist
Screened, trained coaches
Ask whether every coach is background-checked and CPR-certified. At Flow Academy Indio they are. Kids Jiu-Jitsu is led by Professor Carlos Miller, a 4th-degree black belt, and Youth Muay Thai by Coach Adrian, an experienced Muay Thai and MMA fighter.
A free class before any commitment
Your child should step on the mat before you sign anything. At Flow Academy Indio the first class is free.
Age groups that fit
Look for classes built for your child’s age. In Indio that means Little Ninjas (3–6), Kids Jiu-Jitsu (7–9), Youth Jiu-Jitsu (10–14) and Youth Muay Thai split at ten (5–9 and 10–14).
A curriculum you can follow
Ask what your child will learn and how you’ll see progress. In jiu-jitsu, belts and stripes mark steady progress, and promotions should follow your child’s growth, not a calendar. See how belts work at Flow.
Safety you can watch
Look for supervised rounds, partners matched by size and experience, technique before intensity, and a round that stops the instant someone taps. In Youth Muay Thai at Flow, kids work pads, footwork and drills with no sparring.
A seat for parents
Parents are welcome to watch at Flow Academy Indio. It’s the best way to see what your child is learning and how the coaches run the room.
Fair, clear terms
Ask the monthly price, the plan lengths and how cancelling works. At Flow Academy Indio, Kids & Youth Jiu-Jitsu is $165 to $200 a month depending on plan length, Little Ninjas is $120 a month, month-to-month, and cancelling a membership takes 30 days’ notice. Uniforms are not included.
A comfortable room
In the desert, ask where kids train in summer. Our mats are indoors and air-conditioned all year.
Room for every child
Ask how the school includes a child who learns or moves differently. A child with a disability is always welcome in our standard kids and youth classes at the standard price, with reasonable accommodations at no extra charge. Flow Limitless, our adaptive program for ages 6 to 17, meets Thursdays from 4:15 to 5:00 PM.
Questions Worth Asking at the Front Desk
- Are all your coaches background-checked and CPR-certified?
- Is the first class free, and can I stay and watch?
- Which class fits my child’s age, and is there sparring?
- How do belts, stripes or progress work here?
- What are the monthly prices and plan lengths, and how much notice do you need to cancel?
- Do kids have to compete?
- How would you include a child with ADHD, autism or a physical disability?
When to Slow Down
If a school pushes you to sign before your child has tried a class, won’t let you watch, can’t say how coaches are screened, or puts brand-new kids into hard sparring, take your time and ask more questions. Good schools differ in style, and a good one will welcome your questions.
For Families of Kids With Autism, ADHD or Sensory Needs
Look for the same class routine every week, breaks whenever a child needs one, parents who can stay in the room, coaches who use short cues and demonstrations, and contact that is never forced. Martial arts is instruction, not therapy, so a school should talk about skills and routine, not promise outcomes.

Questions Parents Ask
What should I look for in a kids martial arts school in Indio?
Look for background-checked, CPR-certified coaches, a free first class, classes split by age, a clear curriculum, visible safety habits and a place for parents to watch, all of which Flow Academy Indio offers. Its kids classes are grouped from Little Ninjas (3–6) through Youth Jiu-Jitsu (10–14) and Youth Muay Thai (5–14), and the first class is free.
What questions should I ask a martial arts school before my child joins?
Flow Academy Indio suggests asking whether coaches are background-checked and CPR-certified, whether the first class is free and you can watch, which class fits your child’s age, and whether there is sparring. Also ask how progress is measured, the monthly price and plan lengths, how much notice cancelling takes, and whether kids have to compete.
What are warning signs when choosing a kids martial arts school?
At Flow Academy Indio we’d tell any family to slow down if a school pushes you to sign before your child tries a class, won’t let you watch, can’t explain how coaches are screened, or puts new kids into hard sparring. Those are reasons to ask more questions, and a good school will welcome them.
How do I choose martial arts for a child with autism or ADHD in the Coachella Valley?
Look for a weekly routine that stays the same, breaks whenever needed, parents allowed in the room and contact that is never forced; that’s how Flow Limitless at Flow Academy Indio works, Thursdays from 4:15 to 5:00 PM for ages 6 to 17. Martial arts is instruction, not therapy. A child with a disability is always welcome in our standard kids and youth classes at the standard price, with reasonable accommodations at no extra charge.
