Starting Muay Thai After 40, and the Monday 7 PM Class

October 29, 2026

Inside Flow Academy BJJ Indio on an evening, Coach Adrian holds Thai pads while an adult beginner with grey hair, in black Flow gear and red gloves, throws a slow jab at the pad.

Late October in Indio finally gives you permission. The evenings have stopped feeling like an oven, the light drops a little earlier, and the clocks go back on November 1. If you told yourself you’d start something once the heat broke, this is that week.

Starting Muay Thai in your 40s or 50s is a different decision than starting at 20, and we’d rather talk about that honestly. Here are the worries we hear at the front desk of our Jackson Street academy:

  • Will my knees hold up?
  • Will my shins hate me?
  • Can I last a full class?
  • Am I going to be the oldest person in the room?

Our Honest Answers

Knees and shins are yours to look after, and the way to do that is to go at your own pace instead of proving something in week one. New students at Flow work at their own pace from day one. If something already aches, tell Coach Adrian before class starts, and check with your doctor if you’re unsure about starting.

Stamina is real. A class with a warm-up, the technique of the day, pad work and a cool-down is a long hour the first time. Take the breath you need. Nobody is counting your rounds.

As for the oldest-in-the-room worry, every adult in that 7 PM class walked in once without knowing a stance from a stool. Nobody there is grading your age.

Why 7 PM Works After Work

Adult Muay Thai meets Monday and Wednesday at 7 PM. You can finish work, eat something light and still be on the mat on time, and by the time class lets out Indio has cooled off. Coach Adrian leads it.

Pad work is where grown-ups often surprise themselves. You learn a stance, throw a jab at a pad your coach is holding, and get one correction at a time. It rewards patience and timing, and those are things you may already have more of than a 20-year-old does.

Starting Before the New Year Rush

Everyone says January. But a few Monday and Wednesday nights now, with the holidays coming up, mean you already know where your feet go when the New Year crowd arrives. Better a gentle run-up than a plan that starts on January 2.

Your First Class

Your first class is free. Gloves and wraps are ours to lend, so there’s nothing to buy beforehand. Come in comfortable workout clothes. After that, Muay Thai is $125, $145 or $165 a month, depending on whether you sign for 12 months, 6 months or go month to month. Uniforms aren’t included.

Stop by on a Monday or Wednesday evening, or call or text (951) 337-3781. Our adult Muay Thai page has the details, and we train people from Indio, La Quinta, Coachella, Palm Desert and Rancho Mirage.
