What Actually Happens at Saturday Open Mat
August 31, 2026
School's back in session across the Coachella Valley, and if you've got kids, you already know what that does to a weeknight. Homework, dinner, another activity, lights out — the calendar fills up fast between now and Labor Day, and something usually has to give. For a lot of our adults, that something ends up being their own training. Saturday morning tends to be the one block that's still open, and at Flow Academy Indio that's exactly when we run Open Mat.
If you've never been to one, "open mat" is easy to misread as some kind of advanced-only free-for-all. It isn't. There's no warm-up line, no coach calling out a technique for the whole room to drill in unison, no set curriculum at all. From 9 to 11 on Saturday morning, the mats are simply open. You roll with whoever you want to roll with, for as long or as short as you want. You can also just drill — ask a training partner to go slow through a position a coach corrected during the week, or work an escape on your own in a corner of the room while everyone else rolls around you. Nobody's grading you on it, and nobody's keeping score of who showed up.
Who Actually Shows Up
The room on a given Saturday is a mix. A handful of our regulars from Tuesday No-Gi or Thursday Gi class, still working through whatever gave them trouble that week. A few of the 5 AM crew back for a second session, because once a week isn't enough for some people. And most weeks, a couple of newer students who signed up a few weeks ago and just want more mat time than two classes gives them. That last group is who we built this for. Open mat has a reputation at a lot of gyms for being something you earn — a room you wait to be ready for, once you've got a few stripes or a few months in. That's not how it works here. If you're a white belt who wants to roll light, or you'd rather spend the whole hour drilling instead of rolling at all, that's exactly what Saturday morning is for. Nobody's there to test you, and nobody's going to make you feel like you wandered into the wrong room.
Doors are open 9 to 12 on Saturdays, and Open Mat runs straight into our 11 AM MMA training, so if you show up early you'll see both back to back — worth knowing if you're curious what the room looks like an hour later, or just weighing what might come next after Jiu-Jitsu. With Labor Day weekend coming up and a lot of families still finding their footing in the new school year, Saturday morning is a good one to try if the weeknight schedule just isn't working out for you right now. The first class is free, whether that's Open Mat or one of our regular Adult Jiu-Jitsu classes during the week — reach out and we'll get you set up.
