Does This Count as PE? What Homeschool Families in Indio Ask Us in August

August 6, 2026

A child in a white Flow Academy gi photographed from behind, walking onto the mats toward a kneeling coach.

"Does this count as PE?" A mom asked us that straight out last Thursday, sitting on the bench by the mat while her nine-year-old drilled with Coach Zaide. She wasn't making conversation — she had a homeschool PE requirement to satisfy for the year and wanted a real answer before she built her fall schedule around it.

The short version is yes, for most programs, and the reason has less to do with Jiu-Jitsu specifically than with what homeschool and charter PE requirements actually ask for. They're rarely picky about which sport a kid picks. They're picky about structure — a real instructor running the session, a record you can point to, and some way to show the student is actually improving instead of just moving around for an hour.

What a PE log usually needs

Ask your Education Specialist exactly what your program wants documented, but across the families we work with it tends to come down to the same three things:

  • the date and length of each session
  • who taught it
  • what the student worked on or improved

A structured class covers all three without you having to reconstruct it from memory in October. We check kids in at the door for every class, so there's an attendance record sitting there already, and belt and stripe progress gives you something concrete to show growth beyond "he went and had fun."

Why this decision gets made in August

It's not only about paperwork timing. Outdoor PE in the Coachella Valley means picking between a scorching afternoon or shuffling everything to whenever the heat breaks, and by the time school actually starts, an outdoor activity at four in the afternoon is a hard sell most weeks. Our mats are indoor, air-conditioned, and running on the same schedule whether it's June or January, which is part of why so many homeschool families settle this specific question before Labor Day rather than after.

Kids Jiu-Jitsu runs Tuesday and Thursday from 5 to 6 for ages five to nine, with Youth stepping onto the mat right after from 6 to 7 for ages ten to fourteen. Coach Adrian's Youth Muay Thai classes run Monday and Wednesday on the same age split if a kid takes better to striking than grappling — either one satisfies the same structure your PE log is asking for. The first class is free, and it's a full hour, not a sample lap around the room, so you can watch or have your student join in before deciding anything.

If your family already has enrichment funds earmarked, Flow Academy Indio is an approved vendor with Mission Vista Academy, Excel Academy, and Elite Academic Academy, and we're glad to send whatever paperwork your Education Specialist needs to confirm PE eligibility and funding on their end. If you're with a different program, that conversation starts with your ES, not with us — we can't tell you what your specific plan covers, only that we'll answer honestly whatever they ask.

Bring your student by 42425 Jackson Street, Suite C112, or call (951) 337-3781, and we'll get you on the mat for that first free class before the fall schedule fills in around you.
