Will I Be the Only Woman on the Mat?
September 14, 2026
"Will I be the only woman in here?" It's the question we hear more than any other before a woman's first class at Flow Academy Indio, usually asked quietly at the front desk with one foot still near the door. It deserves a real answer, not a pep talk.
You Won't Be Training Alone
No, you won't be. Women train on our Jackson Street mats every week, in Tuesday No-Gi at 7 PM, Thursday Gi at 7 PM, the early 5 AM Gi classes Wednesday through Friday, and Saturday Open Mat from 9 to 11. Some walked in for the first time last month. Some have been training for years. Nobody gets set off to the side running a separate drill. Everyone partners in together, same technique, same live rounds.
Coach Zaide teaches and trains here too, and that changes a room in a way that's hard to explain until you've felt it. Flow doesn't run a separate women's class. It doesn't need to. A woman walking in for the first time can look across the mat and see someone who already made the decision she's about to make.
September Finally Gives Something Back
The valley's been brutal since June, and by the time our 7 PM classes start these evenings, the heat has finally loosened its grip enough that getting to class doesn't feel like its own workout before you've stepped on the mat. School's back in session and routines are resettling, and this is usually the stretch when we see the most new faces walk through the door, women included.
You Don't Need to Get in Shape First
That's the other worry we hear constantly, and it has the order backwards. You don't need to be fit to start Jiu-Jitsu. Jiu-Jitsu is how a lot of people get fit. Your first weeks aren't a test of what you can already do. They're built around learning a handful of positions well enough that your body starts to recognize them on its own.
What an Actual First Few Weeks Looks Like
A first class at Flow Academy Indio runs the same for a new woman as it does for anyone else who walks in nervous.
- A warm-up built around the same movement everyone in class is doing, not a separate track
- A technique broken down step by step and drilled slowly with a partner before speed matters
- Live rolling that's entirely optional in your first weeks, nobody hands you a stopwatch on night one
Nothing about that changes based on who's watching.
If you've been curious about Jiu-Jitsu but the only thing holding you back is picturing a room full of strangers who won't look like you, come see for yourself. Adult classes run Tuesday and Thursday nights at 7 PM at our Indio location on Jackson Street, and your first class is free.
