Not Every Kid Wants a Team Sport — Some Just Need Their Own Mat

August 3, 2026

A child in a white Flow Academy gi photographed from behind, drilling with a kneeling coach on bright mats.

It's a Tuesday at five o'clock, and there's a new seven-year-old standing near the edge of the mat, arms crossed, watching everyone else warm up. He's not sulking exactly — he's sizing up the room, the way a kid does when he's been picked last enough times to expect it again. Coach Zaide doesn't make a thing of it. She waves him onto the mat, pairs him with a kid his own size, and by the second week he's the one correcting a partner's grip.

We see some version of that kid most Tuesdays and Thursdays. He's usually fine on a bike or in the backyard, but soccer tryouts made his stomach hurt, and baseball meant standing in right field hoping the ball never came his way. Team sports ask a kid to be good at the same time as everyone else, in front of everyone else, or the whole team feels it. Some kids thrive there. Plenty don't, and it's not a character flaw — it's just a mismatch.

No bench, no tryouts, no cuts

Jiu-Jitsu doesn't work that way, and neither does Muay Thai. Nobody tries out for a spot in our Kids classes, and nobody gets cut in September when a roster needs trimming down. Every kid on the mat rolls, every class — drilling with a partner close to their own size and skill, not because they earned a starting spot, but because that's simply how the hour runs.

What gets measured is your own kid, against his own last month. A stripe on a white belt isn't a trophy for beating somebody else's kid — it's Coach Zaide or Coach Adrian telling a seven-year-old that his stance actually held this time, that he stopped panicking when a bigger partner got on top. Nobody else's progress affects whether he gets that stripe. There's no scoreboard to lose.

That matters more this time of year than most. School starts back up in a few weeks, and a lot of Coachella Valley parents are trying to lock in one fall activity before the calendar fills itself in without them. If soccer or Little League already came and went as an experiment that didn't take, it's worth trying a room built differently. Kids Jiu-Jitsu runs Tuesday and Thursday from 5 to 6 for ages five to nine, right before Youth steps on the mat at six, and August's Coachella Valley heat is the same reason a lot of our regulars would rather train on real mats indoors than chase a ball around a field at 4 PM.

The first class is free, and we mean the whole hour — not a trial lap around the room. Come watch, or better, have your kid put a gi on and drill with the group. If he's the one hanging back near the wall for the first ten minutes, that's fine. So was the seven-year-old who's correcting grips now.
