Moving Up to the 6 PM Class: What Changes When a Kid Turns Ten
October 5, 2026
It’s the first week of October, the school year is a month old, and the Coachella Valley evenings have finally stopped feeling like an oven. At Tuesday and Thursday pickup, one conversation keeps coming up: a nine-year-old is about to turn ten, and the parent wants to know what changes. The short answer is that the room does.
Same Mats, Next Hour
Kids Jiu-Jitsu for ages 6 to 9 meets Tuesday and Thursday from 5 to 6 PM. Youth Jiu-Jitsu for ages 10 to 14 follows from 6 to 7 PM, on the same mats. Professor Carlos Miller leads our jiu-jitsu classes and Coach Adrian leads youth No-Gi; Tuesday is No-Gi and Thursday is Gi.
Our coaches like to say that a ten-year-old doesn’t need a miniature adult class, and doesn’t want to be taught like a seven-year-old either. The 6 PM hour is built for that in-between.
What Feels Different at Ten
The principles don’t change. Position before submission, concept before technique, and progress without ego are the same in the 5 PM room and the adult room. What changes is how we talk. Older kids can hold a longer explanation, so there’s more “here’s why this works” and a little less of the game that gets a six-year-old to try something.
Partners change too. In the 6 PM class a kid drills with students closer to their own age and size, which a fifth-grader notices immediately and a coach notices half a second later.
The Belt Comes With You
Parents often ask whether moving up resets anything. It doesn’t. Flow’s youth belt ladder is one ladder, with ranks that open up by age, so a student carries their belt and stripes into the next hour exactly as they earned them. Turning ten sends nobody back to the start.
Why Middle Schoolers Get Their Own Hour
Kids this age are suddenly aware of who’s watching. A child who happily rolled around at nine can feel self-conscious at eleven when their partner is much smaller. Putting 10-to-14-year-olds together lets them be the age they are, and the 6 PM start gives a middle schooler time to get home from school, eat something and still make it to Jackson Street.
Kids Jiu-Jitsu runs $165, $185 or $200 a month depending on whether you sign for 12 months, 6 months or go month to month, and uniforms aren’t included in those prices.
Your first class is free. If your child is right on the line between the two groups, call or text us at (951) 337-3781 and we’ll tell you which room fits, or stop by 42425 Jackson Street, Suite C112 on a Tuesday or Thursday. You can also read more on our kids and youth jiu-jitsu page.
