How Coach Adrian Teaches a Total Beginner

September 24, 2026

A Muay Thai coach in black Flow Academy no-gi gear kneels holding focus pads for an adult beginner student, also in black Flow gear, throwing a controlled kick on blue mats at Flow Academy BJJ Indio.

Late September finally cracks the heat in the Coachella Valley, and the 7 PM adult Muay Thai class at Flow Academy Indio fills back in with people who spent August just trying to survive the walk from the car to the front door. Coach Adrian notices the shift every year. More new faces walk in once the evenings cool off, and most of them have never thrown a strike in their life.

He doesn’t start them on power. He starts them on watching.

He Shows It Twice Before You Try It

A first-timer’s instinct is to swing like they’ve seen in a movie. Coach Adrian slows that down before it starts. He’ll hold a pad, throw the same kick slowly, then throw it again from the other side so a beginner sees the stance from both angles before ever stepping up themselves. Only then does he hand them the pad and let them feel where their own foot actually lands.

That’s the same approach whether it’s a 10-year-old in the 6 PM Youth class or an adult who signed up on a whim after work. The stance comes first. The power gets added later, once it has somewhere correct to go.

Corrections Land One at a Time

Walk past a Monday or Wednesday class and you won’t hear him lecture the room. He moves person to person, adjusts a hip here, a hand here, and lets the group keep working while he does it. A beginner gets maybe three real corrections in a class — not because he’s holding back, but because three things a person can actually remember beats ten they’ll forget by the parking lot.

Parents watching from the mat’s edge tend to notice this before their kids do. Nobody gets singled out in front of the room. The correction happens quietly, next to the person, and class keeps moving.

What a First Class Actually Costs You

Nothing, the first time. After that, Muay Thai at Flow Academy Indio runs $125 to $165 a month depending on the term, with no obligation to sign anything longer than month-to-month if that’s what works for your schedule.

The classes: Youth Muay Thai for ages 6 to 9 meets Monday and Wednesday at 5 PM, the 10-to-14 group follows at 6 PM, and Adult Muay Thai is Monday and Wednesday at 7 PM. Gloves and wraps are ready to borrow for a first visit — you don’t need to own anything to find out if this is for you.

Why It’s Worth Walking In

The Coachella Valley’s evening heat finally lets people move again this time of year, and Coach Adrian’s classes fill up fast once school schedules settle into their fall rhythm. If you’ve been putting off a first Muay Thai class because you didn’t want to feel out of place, that’s exactly the beginner he’s built this approach around.

Call or text us at (951) 337-3781, or just walk in Monday or Wednesday evening at 42425 Jackson Street. Your first class is free, and nobody expects you to already know what you’re doing.
