What Does Crossing the Midline Mean for a 4-Year-Old?

November 4, 2026

Four preschool-aged children in white Flow gis and white belts, seen mostly from behind on a blue mat, bear crawl toward orange cones beside a coach in a black belt at Flow Academy BJJ Indio.

Crossing the midline means reaching one hand or foot across to the other side of the body, past an imaginary line down the middle. At Flow Academy BJJ Indio, our Little Ninjas class for ages 3 to 6 plays games built around it on Thursdays from 3:15 to 4:00 PM. The first class is free, and it’s $120 a month, month-to-month.

You can see the full class on our Little Ninjas page. Here’s what the reaching actually looks like on the mat.

A Bear Crawl and an Orange Cone

Picture four kids bear crawling across the mat toward a row of orange cones. The only rule is to touch the cone with the opposite hand: right hand reaches over to the left side, then the left hand comes back the other way. Most of them don’t know they’re doing anything special. They think they’re bears.

Plenty of three-year-olds do the opposite at first. They keep the right hand on the right side and grab whatever is closest. We’re fine with that. Nobody on our mats is checking a box. We keep the game going and let the reach get a little farther each Thursday.

Why We Play It Instead of Drilling It

Little ones learn by moving, and they’re ready for the next game before the last one is finished. So every game gets one clear job and a reason to laugh. Touch the cone. Pass the beanbag behind your back from one hand to the other. Step on the stepping stones with the opposite foot. Our coaches keep each one short and bring the next one out while kids are still smiling.

It’s also a good way to practise listening. “Opposite hand” is a two-part instruction, and a four-year-old who hears it, tries it and giggles when it goes sideways is getting plenty out of the afternoon.

It’s November, and That Helps

The heat has finally broken in the Coachella Valley, school is in full swing, and the clocks went back on Sunday. A 3:15 class lets out at 4:00 with daylight still left for the drive home, and the mat is a good place for kids who have been sitting in a classroom all week to move on purpose.

Try It at Home in 10 Minutes

You don’t need equipment. Put a pillow or stuffed animal on the floor to your child’s left and another to the right, then play it like this:

  • Bear crawl toward the pillows on hands and bare feet.
  • Call out “right hand to the left pillow!” and let them figure it out.
  • Swap sides, then add a silly animal sound.
  • Stop while they still want more.

Five or ten minutes is plenty. Cheer for trying, not for getting it “right,” and if it falls apart into giggling on the rug, that counts as a win.
