Adult BJJ for Beginners in Indio: What Your First Week Looks Like

May 26, 2026

Adult beginners sitting together on the mats during their first week of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training.

Starting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as an adult can feel intimidating from the outside. Most people picture a room full of experienced grapplers and worry they will be the only beginner. The reality at Flow Academy Indio is a lot friendlier than that. Adults start here all the time, at every age and fitness level, and the program is built to bring you in gently rather than throw you to the wolves.

Your first week is about learning the environment more than mastering technique. You will learn how to move on the mats, how to work safely with a partner, and a handful of fundamental positions that show up in almost every class. Coaches keep new students close, correct the important things, and let the small stuff wait. Nobody expects you to look smooth on day one, and you should not either.

Gi, No-Gi, and finding your times

Indio gives adults a real weekly schedule to build a habit around. There is early-morning Gi at 5:00 AM on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday for people who like to train before work. Evenings include No-Gi on Tuesday at 7:00 PM and Gi on Thursday at 7:00 PM. Saturday Open Mat from 9:00 to 11:00 AM is where members put it all together in a relaxed, team-first setting. You do not have to pick perfectly at first. Try a couple of class types and see what fits your week and your body.

What structure does for a beginner

The thing that keeps adults training is not intensity, it is progress they can see. Our curriculum moves from staying safe and escaping bad positions toward building a dependable personal game over time. Because promotions are tied to real technical demonstration, consistent mat time, and how you carry yourself in the room, you always know what you are working toward. That clarity is what turns a nervous first week into a training habit that lasts years.

A few practical notes: wear comfortable athletic clothing for your first visit and contact us beforehand if you are unsure what to bring, since uniforms are not included with membership. Come hydrated, come curious, and give yourself permission to be a beginner.

Who you will be training with

Adult classes at Indio are led by an experienced coaching team, not a single instructor stretched thin. Professor Carlos Miller, our founder, is a fourth-degree black belt with more than twenty-nine years on the mats. Albert Aguirre, a first-degree black belt born and raised in Indio, leads much of the adult No-Gi and morning Gi. Ron Ishikawa brings a second-degree black belt along with a Judo background. That depth means whatever time you train, you are learning from someone who has been exactly where you are and knows how to bring a beginner along safely. It also means the room has a real range of ages and body types, so you will never be the odd one out.

Your first class is free, so there is no risk in finding out whether adult BJJ is for you. Book an adult trial and we will take care of the rest.
