The 5 AM Class: Why a Room Full of Adults Chooses Jiu-Jitsu Before Sunrise
July 20, 2026
It's 4:52 on a Wednesday morning, the desert sky still more black than blue, and the parking lot outside our Suite C112 door already has six cars in it. Inside, gis are getting tied, a couple of regulars are trading quiet fist bumps, and nobody's checking a phone. By 5:00 sharp, the mats are moving.
This is the 5 AM class — Adult Gi Jiu-Jitsu, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, before almost anything else in Indio is even open. Once you know why it exists, it stops sounding like a strange time to train and starts sounding like the smartest hour of the day.
Why 5 AM, specifically
Ask anyone who trains before sunrise and you'll get some version of the same answer: this is the one hour the Coachella Valley summer hasn't claimed yet. By nine, the pavement's already hot. By noon, stepping outside feels like a mistake. Five AM is still cool, still quiet, and still entirely yours before work starts, before the kids wake up, before the day starts making decisions for you.
Who actually shows up
The honest answer is a little bit of everyone. Contractors who start job sites at seven. Nurses coming off a night shift who'd rather train than go straight to sleep. Parents who want their mat time in before school drop-off eats the rest of the morning. A few of our longtime blue and purple belts treat it as the one class the day can't take from them, no matter what meetings or errands show up later.
Albert Aguirre, our morning Gi lead and a 1st-degree black belt under Professor Carlos Miller, runs this room the same way every time — no rushing, no ego, just steady reps before the sun's even up. It's a small class by nature, which means more hands-on correction and less waiting your turn.
What it actually feels like
There's a different energy at 5 AM than there is at 7 PM. Nobody's blowing off a stressful workday to be here. Everyone in the room chose to be awake this early on purpose, and that tends to filter out anything but genuine effort. Warm-ups start slow while everyone's still shaking off sleep, then the room wakes up fast once positional drilling starts. By the time class ends at 6, the sun's just coming up over the parking lot, and there's still a full hour before most people even open their laptops.
Starting as a beginner
You don't need experience, flexibility, or your own uniform to walk in — your first class is free, and we'll get you a loaner gi if you show up without one. If 5 AM feels early for a first try, that's fair; a lot of our morning regulars started in our Tuesday 7 PM No-Gi or Thursday 7 PM Gi class first and moved to mornings once they felt the difference training before the heat makes. Either way works, and Saturday Open Mat from 9 to 11 is there if you'd rather ease in on a weekend.
Adult Gi membership runs 175 a month on a 12-month plan, 195 on a 6-month plan, or 225 month-to-month, with uniforms sold separately; ask about private lessons if you'd rather start one-on-one with a coach. Stop by 42425 Jackson Street, Suite C112, call us at (951) 337-3781, or just show up a few minutes before 5 — the door's already open.
